Prior to breast augmentation surgery, the plastic surgeon works with the patient to plan the results of the surgery to make sure that she is happy with the size and shape of the breast implants. While most women are happy with the results, occasionally the outcome is not as expected or complications arise that make it necessary to reverse or modify the procedure.
Dissatisfaction with size, style, or fill material requires an elective implant exchange to produce a more pleasing result. However, most exchanges are due to medical causes, such as the need to replace ruptured or leaking implants, repair poor results from other surgeons, balance asymmetrical results (uneven breast size or height), or correct other problems such as scar tissue formation around the implant (capsular contracture), improper placement, or “bottoming out,” where the implant drops too low. In some cases, the implants are removed and not replaced. Patients who had implants at a young age may later want to upgrade.
